NEWEL
POSTS & RAILINGS INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
IMPORTANT : Be sure to mark the center point
of each newel post’s location prior to installation
to insure proper spacing. All joints, ceiling/wall interfaces
must use PL Premium Adhesive (read directions before use)
for warranty purposes & to ensure lasting installation.
A. DETAILS OF SECURING OF NEWEL POST TO
CONCRETE
1. Center thread rod on centermark of post location and
mark anchor location.
2. Drill 3/8 “ hole to minimum depth of 1 1/4”.
Clear holes and insert anchor into hole, tapping the anchor
in until flush with surface of concrete. Using a setting
pin (metal pin or similar tool) strike with sharp blows
until anchors are set.
3. Thread rod into anchor and tighten.
B. DETAILS OF SECURING OF NEWEL POST TO
WOOD DECKING
1. Install blocking if required (minimum requirement : 2“
X 6“ CCA treated Southern Pine) beneath the center
of each newel post, fastening with screws or nails to deck
joists.
2. Center floor flange on top of center-mark of post location
and secure to decking and blocking with 3 “ lag screws.
3. Thread 1/2” rod into welded nut on floor flange
and tighten with Vise Grips.
** Note it is suggested to fill the inside of the newel
posts with concrete once the installation is complete, but
before installing newel caps. This will make a much more
stable system.
C. DETAILS OF “C” CHANNEL POST FASTENER
1. Place newel post over thread rod and insert “C”
channel into mortised slot in the top of newel post with
open side of the “C” channel to the top, flush
with the surface of post. Be sure to use PL Premium between
the newel and decking material.
2. Position the newel post where desired
and tighten down nut.
3. Trim excess rod flush with top or use
as dowel for newel cap.
D & E. DETAILS OF BRACKET INSTALLATION
& RAIL ATTACHMENT
1. Measure the combined height of the bottom rail and baluster.
This is the distance between angle brackets used to install
the top and bottom railings.
2. Locate, center and level each bracket
in newel post and drill holes for bolts. Each bolt should
have 2 lock washers, 2 flat washers and 1 nut. Attach brackets
with a minimum of one the 1/4” bolt and 2 - 2”
x #12 screws. Locate the bolt in the center hole location
of the bracket, threading the bolt from the inside of the
post to the outside for ease of tightening nut.(this applies
only to newel posts with PVC pipe). For posts with no PVC
pipe, use bolts on all three holes.
3. The support brackets can also be mortised into the newels
for a cleaner installation. Remove post for mortise operation
if desired. Measure thickness of brackets and mortise newel
post to proper depth for each bracket. Fasten brackets as
per step 2 and return post to its location and secure. (Remember
to use PL Premium)
4. Notch bottoms of both rails to accept brackets. (optional)
RAIL & BALUSTER ASSEMBLY
& INSTALLATION
IMPORTANT: Railings are designed to span
a distance of no more than eight feet, and must be end secured
by walls, newel posts or other strong supporting members.
1. Measure distance between center of newel
posts at height of brackets and cut rails to length.
2. Measure size of angle bracket and notch bottom end of
each rail to accept bracket. (optional)
3. Measure the layout for balusters and drill holes in top
and bottom rails according to the size required for type
of baluster (see guide). Holes should penetrate supporting
pipe in railing.
4. Rough all glue surfaces well with coarse sandpaper exposing
the polyurethane material beneath the paint. Be sure to
do this on bottom and top of balusters, where balusters
contact with rail, rails contact with newel posts, newel
posts or other parts contact walls or ceilings.
5. Apply adhesive to bottom and tops of balusters and into
holes of rails. Install balusters into bottom rail then
top rail, making sure they are properly aligned. This must
be done within 45 minutes of applying PL Premium adhesive.
Apply enough adhesive so that it will squeeze out to the
edges when it is compressed. Wipe off excess adhesive as
quickly as possible.
6. Place mechanical supports (straps, clamps,..etc.) every
2’- 3’ with protective material between rails
and supports to keep from damaging edges. Caulk gaps between
balusters and railings with high quality paintable exterior
sealant. Clamp for 24 hrs. before continuing.
7. Apply adhesive to the ends of rails and place on angle
brackets. Secure with self-threading screws. Caulk all edges.
8. Apply cap/ball with adhesive and screws.
NOTE: If span of railing is 8 FEET or more,
use a polyurethane support block at the center of the bottom
rail. Glue and caulk.
PAINT PREPARATION: Caulk all areas before painting. Use
a quality product for all spot priming. For finish coat
use a quality oil based paint that meets all fire codes.
COLUMN & POST ASSEMBLY
& INSTALLATION
IMPORTANT: Top and bottom rails must be
measured separately
The same directions for the installation of newel posts
apply to the installation of posts and columns, except that
the rails should be measured with the knowledge that they
must be slightly longer to accommodate the wrap around of
the circumference of the post/column.
To ensure proper fitting:
1. Measure the widest part of the rail.
IMPORTANT: if the widest area is not used for the measurement,
a poor wrap will result (see details A & B illustrated).
2. Make a template of the radius of the
of the post/column. Draw the width of the rail on the template
so that the end points of the measurement touch the edges
of the radius (see details illustrated right)
3. Draw a 2nd line at 90 degrees from the
center of the 1st line to the edge of the template. The
length of the 2nd line is the depth required to be coped
from the end of the rail. This is also the extra length
required when measuring the rails (x 2).
4. Draw a line the required length 90 degrees
from the center of the rails edges on the flattest part
(usually the bottom) and trace coping line with the template.
5. Remove post/column from location to mortise
for brackets. Mortise the thickness of the bracket plus
the same measurement used for the coping. Be sure not to
mortise too deep as the bracket will not show enough surface
for the rail to mount.
6. Notch the bottom of each rail to accommodate
brackets. (optional)
7. Thoroughly rough all glue surfaces and
apply PL Premium adhesive.
8. Use mechanical supports as required.
